The history of Christkindlmarkt
Just like every year...
... also this year all lanes and places at the historic center of regensburg are illuminated for christmas.
The center part of christmas habits is the famous "Regensburger Christkindlmarkt" (christmas market), which traditionally happens since more than 400 years on Neupfarrplatz in the heart of Regensburg. He is said to be one of the ten most beautiful christmas markets in the german speaking area, pronounced by an independent jury.
Lots of Christmas booths offer mangers and accessories, ornaments for christmas trees, wooden toys, christmas gifts and many other things. A lot of handicraft is shown: glass makers, carvers, potters, candle makers are showing their arts and some of them produce directly on the market.
People like regional culinaric specialities like different spicy fruit wines (blackberry or apple), the original "Regensburger Knackersemmel" (a crispy roll with roasted sausages, mustard, horseraddish, and dip pickles) Of course you won’t miss roasted almonds, roasted chestnuts, and the famous gingerbread.
For small visitors you will find a carousel with nice wooden horses, coaches and little cars. Dedicated to the children is each wednesday afternoon: Santa Claus will be here with a lot of gifts and sweets. |
